Parentmail Updates

November 2025

7-11-25

Dear Parents and Carers,

We hope you had a good half term break. It has been lovely to have the students back in school.

Yesterday staff and students had the privilege of being able to say goodbye to one of our students, Christina, who passed away last month. Some staff, students and parents were able to line up outside the school to pay their respects to Christina and her family, as the hearse drove past the school.

It is always a privilege to be part of the lives of our young people and to be able to remember them and their amazing contributions to our school community.

Death can be a difficult subject to think or talk about, for adults and children alike. If this is something you would like to discuss further, please contact your child's class teacher or the family work team.

Reminders

Arrival time

We request that parents do not bring their children into school before 8.45am in the mornings. This is because our teaching assistants do not start work until 8.45am. We have noticed that some students are arriving earlier and as a result the reception area is becoming a little overcrowded. Thank you for your cooperation with this request.

Metal Water bottles

If you send in a water bottle with your child please send in a small, plastic one. Please do not send in a heavy or metal water bottle as unfortunately these can result in significant injury if they are thrown. In many classes students will be easily able to access a drink of water during the course of the day.

Coffee morning - All Women's Centre - Monday 10th November 9.30 -11.00am

Parents are invited to join us at school on Monday morning when we will be joined by Satarah Loftus form the All Women's Centre. We have only had a few replies, but parents are welcome to turn up on Monday. If you want more information, contact Shazmeen - Shazmeen.malik@woodlands.luton.sch.uk

Anti Bullying Week

Next week is Anti Bullying Week. Next week and in the coming weeks, we will be doing some work with the students about Bullying and how to stop it. We have an Anti Bullying policy which can be accessed on the school's website https://www.woodlands.luton.sch.uk/school-policies/

We use the word BOO to try to explain the difference between one off misunderstandings and bullying

B - Being mean

O - On purpose

O - Over and over again

Bullying is a repeated intentional act. A large proportion of our children's behaviour is not bullying as there needs to be a cognitive intent to cause harm and to do this repeatedly.

Where bullying appears to be happening, we take this very seriously and address this with all students who may be involved and it will be raised with parents/carers.

Children in Need - Friday 14th November

All staff and students were requested to come to school dressed in spots or sparkles or both. Staff and students are requested to make a suggested donation of £2 towards the BBC Children in Need Appeal - this can be made via the parentmail app. Please be assured that everyone can participate regardless of ability to make a donation.

The school council will be selling cakes for 50p each, to add to our fundraising efforts.

16 - 19 Bursary - Closing date for applications - Friday 14th November.

Please refer to the Parentmail previously sent. Information is also available on the school website.

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have had a busy first half term and I am sure that students and staff alike are looking forward to a break next week. We hope everyone has a chance to recharge their batteries, ready for the next half term.

Autumn 2 events
Attached to this email is a list of the key events that will be happening in school next half term. If you would like a paper copy, please contact your child's class teacher and we will send this out after half term.

I would like to draw your attention to the coffee morning on Monday 10th November. There will be a guest speaker, Sarah from Luton All Women's Centre. It would be lovely to welcome parents of our new students to join those who have been associated with the school for longer.  For more information, please contact the family worker team.

Headteacher update
In the summer holidays I made the decision that after 33 years of teaching, I will be retiring at the end of August 2026.

When I came to Woodlands, 13 and a half years ago, as the deputy headteacher, I knew this would be the school that I would stay at, until I retired.  Having worked in 5 other schools before coming here, I knew this would be my last school as it felt like my 'work home' from day one. When I took on the headship role, I was up front with the governors and they knew it was my intention to retire in the summer 2027.

As you will know, the past couple of years have not been easy - having been in a car accident, and needing two hip replacements. These things put life into perspective and have led me to making the decision to retire a year sooner than initially planned.

Headteachers have to give the governors 2 terms' notice.  The governors have initiated the recruitment process. The post will be advertised in the coming weeks.  I have wanted to inform staff and parents directly, rather than people finding out by spotting an advert.

This is a great school.  I work with an amazing staff team and we have the privilege of working with, and for, children and families who need our commitment to help them be as independent and resilient as they can be. This has always been apparent to any visitor to the school and I am sure this is what any visiting prospective headteachers will think and feel when they walk around.

We also face a number of significant challenges, amongst these are the changes to Post 16 and meeting the needs of changing cohorts.    The governors are being open and transparent about these challenges and about the opportunities that will arise when Kestrel Way opens, so that any applicants will know what the job will involve.

If a suitable candidate is appointed this term, we will have an ample amount of time to ensure that there is a comprehensive handover before the next academic year.

In the meantime, it is business as usual.  I will still be here for the rest of the academic year and I am still committed to the school and my role.

I hope everyone has a well deserved half term break and we will see the students and staff again on Monday 3rd November.

Kind regards,

Sandra

Dear Parents

Nomination for Parent Governors

I am writing to inform you of a vacancy for the role of parent governor on our governing board. The current term of service for one of our parent governors, Sam Batchelor, expires on 18th November 2025. Sam has been a very dedicated parent governor at the school since November 2021. Her daughters will be leaving the school this year and she has decided not to stand for a further term of office. We wish to express our gratitude to Sam for her commitment to the role and wish her well for the future.

The role of the governing board

The school’s governing board is responsible for providing confident and strategic leadership, and creating robust accountability, oversight and assurance for the school’s educational and financial performance.
The board is passionate about education and committed to continuous school improvement to ensure the best possible outcomes for our pupils.

The role of a parent governor

As a parent governor, you’ll work with the board to make sure it effectively carries out the duties referred to above. You’ll also play a vital role in bringing a parental perspective to the governing board, but you’re not there to speak ‘on behalf’ of the parent body.

To be a parent governor you should have:

·A strong commitment to the role and to improving outcomes for children

·Good interpersonal skills, curiosity, and a willingness to learn and develop new skills

·The specific skills required to make sure the governing board delivers effective governance

The governing board is keen for candidates to have skills in the following areas:

·Safeguarding

·Health and Safety

·Finance management

·Compliance

·Curriculum

·Human resources

Expectations of governors

Governors are expected to:

·Attend meetings – there are a minimum of 4 meetings of the Governing Board each year (a Business meeting in September plus one full GB meeting each term). Governors normally participate in one of two committees – the Curriculum committee or the Finance, Premises and Personnel committee – these committees usually meet termly. Most meetings are in the evening, usually starting at 6.00pm. Governors may be required to participate in other ad hoc committees, as required.

·Maintaining confidentiality – information shared and discussed in governor meetings is confidential and must not be disclosed.

·Committing to training – Governors have a responsibility to keep up to date with training to support them to fulfil their role. Training is available both online and face to face.

·Visiting the school – Governors may undertake visits to the school as part of their role to monitor the implementation of school improvement plan and in relation to their specific roles and responsibilities

·The term of office – Parent Governors commit to a 4 year term of office.

How to apply

If you’re interested in applying for the role, we have extended the deadline for applications. Please complete the candidate form attached to this letter and return to the school office by Wednesday 5th November 2025. If we receive more applications than there are vacancies, a secret ballot will be carried out. We will inform you closer to the time if we have to do this.

Paper copies of the candidate form can be obtained from the school office, in person or by requesting that a copy is sent home with your child.

If you would like to talk to me or the Chair of Governors, Nadeem Butt, who is also a parent governor, please contact the school office and we will make the appropriate arrangements.

Please email: schooloffice@woodlands.luton.sch.uk

Kind regards,

Dear Parents / carers,

Please ensure that your child is provided with a snack for them to consume each day in school. This can be sent in with them daily, or you can provide it in bulk to cover a longer period, replenishing as and when needed.

To help us keep every child safe, please:

  • Do not send any food containing nuts or traces of nuts in your child’s lunch or snack. This includes:
    • Peanut butter and other nut butters
    • Chocolate spreads (such as Nutella or similar)
    • Cereal bars, granola bars, biscuits or cakes containing nuts
    • Any other food with nuts listed in the ingredients
  • Check all food labels carefully before sending items into school.
  • If you are unsure, please choose a nut-free alternative

Exposure to nuts, even through shared surfaces or airborne particles, can cause life-threatening allergic reactions for some of our students. By working together, we can provide a safe and inclusive environment for everyone.

If you are experiencing financial hardship, please do contact the family team who can offer advice and signposting.

Thank you,
The team at Woodlands.

Dear Parents and Carers,

Transport - parental drop off/pick up
Thank you to all those parents and carers who drop off/pick up their children on a daily basis.  Thank you for your continued patience and supporting us as we try to safely manage the arrival and departure times.

Morning drop offs:
8.45 - 8.55am - KS3 (cafe car park) and WISERR (main entrance).
8.55 - 9.05am - KS4 (cafe car park) and PMLD, Provisions and Pedestrians (main entrance).

Please do not arrive before 8.45am. Support staff do not start work until 8.45am and we will be unable to receive students before this time.

Afternoon pick ups:
2.55 - 3.05pm - KS3 (cafe car park) and WISERR (main entrance).
3.05 - 3.15pm - KS4 (cafe car park) and PMLD, Provisions and Pedestrians (main entrance).

The school gates will not be opened until 2.50pm. Please do not arrive earlier than this time.

Please do not block Northwell Drive. If it is busy, we politely request that you drive to the next roundabout and turn around to return and try again.  If it continues to be busy, please drive round again or park up and return a few minutes later.

Student illness
If your child is unwell, please keep them at home until they are fully recovered. This is especially important if your child is experiencing symptoms such as:
  • Fever or high temperature
  • Cough, sore throat, or difficulty breathing
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Unexplained rash
  • General symptoms of being unwell (tiredness, aches, or chills)

Keeping children at home when they are ill helps to prevent the spread of infections to other students and staff and will allow your child time to rest and recover properly.

You will need to report the absence by calling the school number (01582 572880)  and press number 3 - where you can leave a message for the attendance team.

If your child becomes ill during the course of the school day, please ensure that the school will be able to contact you by telephone should you be required to come and collect them.

Macmillan Coffee morning - Friday 3rd October
Parents are invited to visit the school cafe between 9.30 - 11.30am on 3rd October.  You can purchase some tea and cake.   There will be a donation box in the cafe for those who wish to make a donation towards the Macmillan charity as they seek to support those affected by cancer.

Open Evening - Monday 6th October
If you have not already done so, please email your class team to arrange an appointment to meet the teacher. The class team will confirm the time of your appointment.  Appointments are scheduled for 10 minute slots.  We encourage parents to stick to these time slots to ensure that the evening works well for all parents and the staff teams.

Please allow some extra time for your visit to the school - we will be holding the Transitions Fair in the hall between 4.00 - 6.00pm. There will be representatives from the Transitions team, Barnfield college, Central Beds college, Oaklands college, and the Travel Assistance team.   We are also hoping to have some representatives from Community Choices (social care). The local authority are holding a Transitions event for young people with an EHCP plan on Tuesday 14th October, between 5pm to 7pm, at Chiltern Academy, LU1 3GF.

As you may be aware, the local authority have made the decision that young people at Woodlands will no longer automatically remain at Woodlands for Year 12 and Year 13. In July 2025, many of our Year 11s were offered places at the local colleges.

We strongly encourage parents to equip themselves with as much information as possible about the options that may be available for their child at the end of Year 11. All parents will be consulted about their preferences for Post 16 education when they are in Year 11. The local authority SENDAT team will be the decision makers about placement.

We will also be offering parents the opportunity to express their views about the school via the annual parent survey.

There will be limited parking on site for this event. We will open the front playground to provide a little more capacity, but we will not be able to provide a parking space for everyone. Please allow extra time to find somewhere to park. This may need to be off site. We request that you follow the directions of staff supervising parking that evening.

The school cafe will be open between 4.00 - 6.00pm if you wish to purchase a drink and snack.

Harvest Assemblies - Friday 10th October
On Friday 10th October we will be having our Harvest assemblies where we will be collecting food to donate to the Luton Foodback who are committed to eliminating Food Poverty in Luton.
The items that the Foodbank are particularly looking for are:
  • tinned vegetables
  • tinned meat or fish
  • breakfast cereal
  • dried rice
  • fruit juice
  • UHT milk
Food items should have at least a 3 month 'best before' date.
If you are able to make a donation, please send in items between 6th - 10th October.  We will have some collection boxes available on Monday 6th October at the Open Evening event.

Have a lovely weekend
Kind Regards
Sandra Clarke

Dear Parents and Carers

Nut Free School

At Woodlands Secondary School, the safety and wellbeing of all our students is our top priority. We are writing to remind you that our school is a nut-free environment. This policy is in place because we have students with severe nut allergies, and even a tiny trace of nuts can trigger a serious allergic reaction.

If your child has special dietary needs please do not hesitate to contact us.

Dear Parents and Carers,

Impact of changes to the SEND transport policy

You may have read the article published on the Luton Today website on 22nd September. The article is titled 'Council defends transport changes for SEND students in Luton despite Lib Dem criticism.'

https://www.lutontoday.co.uk/news/politics/council/council-defends-transport-changes-for-send-students-in-luton-despite-lib-dem-criticism-5329098

Councillor Gillian Fry, is the Liberal Democrat councillor for Round Green, and the shadow education portfolio holder on the council. Mrs Fry supported the parent mentioned in the article and she is keen to hear from other families affected by the changes in the local authority SEND transport policy. She is keen to arrange a meeting with parents and to find out about the hardships caused by the new SEND transport policy.

She wants to highlight the problems caused by the policy with a view that the council will listen.

If you are interested in speaking to Gillian, you can contact her directly by email: gillian.fry@luton.gov.uk

Please email your child’s class teacher by Friday 26th September with your preferred time slot (the
class team will reply to confirm your appointment time)
4.00 – 4.30 pm
4.30 – 5.00 pm
5.00 – 5.30 pm
5.30 – 6.00 pm
6.00 – 6.30 pm

Alternatively, please inform your class teacher if you are unable to attend or would prefer a telephone
consultation (at a different time)

We will also be holding a transitions event during the evening, in the school hall. This a fantastic
opportunity for you to come in and meet with various providers and support services from the local
community. You will have the opportunity to learn about the services they provide, and ask any
questions directly to them in order to help you begin to plan for your child’s future.

Yours sincerely

Dear Parents/Carers

Please see below information for you about tomorrow and an ongoing petition

Jeans for Genes Day

Tomorrow, Friday 19th September we will be supporting Jeans for Genes day. Students and staff can wear their jeans and denim to school. We suggest a donation of £2 towards this charity. This can be paid online via Parentmail.

Petition for safe pedestrian crossing outside Woodlands School, on Northwell Drive
As many of you will know, crossing Northwell Drive, just outside the school is difficult and potentially dangerous. Parents and carers attempt to cross the road, with their children, when dropping them off or collecting them from school. Staff support students to cross the road when going out for community walks and visits. Everyday this is a challenge.

The council have implemented a 20mph zone outside of the school, sadly not every driver adheres to this speed limit. Although there is an existing underpass on the road, it is not accessible on the school side of Northwell Drive.

Our colleague, Ruth, has organised a petition on the Luton Council website, requesting a safe crossing, ideally a zebra crossing, outside the school.
We would be very grateful if you would take the time to sign the e-petition and request your friends, family and neighbours to do the same.

The petition is open until 16th October.
You can also access the link from the Official Woodlands Secondary School Facebook page.

Please note, there are 265 students on the school roll. Approximately 100 students have a place on a bus to/from school. Parents and carers accompany the remaining students to and from school.

Dear Parents/ Carers,

School Meals information

Now the academic year is in full swing, we thought it would be useful to send out some information regarding school meals. Effective from September 2025, school meals have increased to £4.00. Unfortunately, the school is no longer in a position to subsidise school meals. Details of our school meals and menus are available on our website https://www.woodlands.luton.sch.uk/school-dinner-information/.

Orders for school meals are placed each morning by classes for students who are in school.

To ensure that meals are ordered and charged correctly, please note the following:

- If your child has a morning appointment and will be in school for lunch time - parents need to inform the class, by email, if a meal is required. This needs to be done by 8:45am at the latest. Otherwise, a packed lunch is required to be brought in by parents.

- If your child arrives late for any other reason - you will need to speak to the office team, on arrival.

- If a student leaves school early and does not require a meal, then parents also need to inform the class, by email, that no meal is required. This needs to be done by 8:45am at the latest. Otherwise, there is a risk that you will still be charged for the meal.

Ordered meals will be charged.

Payment for meals is through Parentmail under the accounts section and automatic top ups can be set to avoid accounts falling into arrears. School meals will not be provided for accounts persistently in arrears, and a packed lunch will need to be provided from home.

If you have any questions or need any assistance then please contact the school office on 01582 572880/ schooloffice@woodlands.luton.sch.uk

Kind regards

The School Office

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have had our first full week in school and students and staff are in the process of settling into their new classes and routines.

We will be inviting parents and carers to come to our Open Evening and meet their child's teacher and class team on Monday 6th October between 4.00 - 6.30pm. Further information will be sent out next week.

On Friday 19th September we will participate in Jeans for Genes activities at school. Students and staff are invited to wear their jeans to school that day and to make a donation of £2 towards the charity, via Parentmail, and a link will be sent shortly.

Parental drop off/collection of students - we are getting into a routine and once again we thank parents for their patience and cooperation. There have been one or two incidents when cars trying to turn into the school from Northwell Drive have blocked the road and some other road users have been a little frustrated. If the turn off is busy, we request that you do not block the road but drive to the next roundabout and return to the school to try again.

We request that parents do not arrive at school before 8.40am in the mornings or before 2.50pm in the afternoon.

If you need to pick your child up earlier on a regular basis, please send an email for my attention and explain the reason for the request. I will respond to these requests.

Have a lovely weekend,

Kind regards,

Sandra

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thank you for supporting us as we implement a new arrivals and departures system at the school. Overall, the process has gone very well and your patience has been greatly appreciated. Mornings are working particularly well and afternoons will
always be a little slower.

Please do not arrive at the school before 8.40am. Our school staff do not start work until 8.45am and your child will not be collected until after this time.

If you do not usually drop your child off to school in the mornings or pick them up in the afternoon, please note all cars will be directed to enter the slip road opposite the bus stop on Northwell Drive. Please do not try to cross to the main
entrance during the busy transport times. We are trying to safely manage traffic and to keep everyone safe.

If you decide to make different arrangements to collect /pick up your child, on a particular day – please inform the school as soon as possible so that we can direct your child to the correct part of the school at the end of the day.

For example, you will need to let us know if:
 your child usually travels by bus but you are collecting them by car or walking
 you normally walk your child into school and you decide to pick them up by
car
 you normally drive to collect them and you decide to walk.

This is particularly important if your child is in KS3 or KS4 as the car drop off pick up point and the pedestrian drop off and pick up point are at opposite ends of the school. Please call the school office and, if possible notify your child’s class by
sending an email.

Here is a summary of drop off and pick up times.

*There are one or two students whose arrangements are slightly different.

If you need someone different to drop off or collect your child from school, please contact the school office as soon as possible on that day, to inform us of the change.

You will be asked to provide the full name of the person who will be collecting your child, as well as a password. Our staff will then verify both the name and the password with your nominated individual when they come to collect your child.

Please ensure that you have signposted this person as to where and when they should collect your child. Please share a copy of the drop off/ pick up plan with them and advise them to follow the direction of staff.

If for any reason you arrive after the school gates are closed at 9.05am, please use the main entrance and liaise with the office team.

Have a lovely weekend,

Kind regards,

Sandra
