Attendance and Absence

Attendance

Our students are entitled to a full time education and we wish to work with parents to ensure that students access this entitlement. We want to ensure that when students can be in school, that they are attending.

We now have a new system in place whereby fines will be issued for unauthorised absences.

Please note that all sickness absence and appointments (e.g. GP appointment, physio, optician etc) will be authorised.

If your child has medical appointments to attend, the school should be notified in advance and copies of appointment notifications shared with staff. If your child has a morning appointment, they are expected to return to school straight after the appointment; if they have an afternoon appointment, they should attend school in the mornings and be collected for their appointment.

The school will authorise term time absences where students and their families are participating in religious celebrations e.g. Eid, Diwali, etc. We request that the school is informed before the event.

On occasion, families will request permission for students to have time off during term time due to the need to travel or go on holiday. This will not usually be granted. Where possible we request that these arrangements are made during school holiday periods.

In acknowledgement that many of our families have extended families far away from Luton and emergencies do happen, the Headteacher may authorise up to a maximum of 5 school days authorised absence; please note this is at the Headteacher's discretion and is not a right.

Again, parents are requested to inform the school before travelling and to provide flight and contact information so that we can fulfil our duty to safeguard our young people. Copies of the Leave of Absence request forms can be found on our website: https://www.woodlands.luton.sch.uk/letters-and-forms/

Reporting sickness absence

We do understand that there will be times when students will be unwell and we request that parents inform the school, via our telephone absence reporting line, if your children will be off school due to sickness.

Please follow the steps below to report your child's absence:

  1. Call the school office on 01582 572880
  2. Select Option 3 to access the attendance line.
  3. When prompted, please clearly state the following details:
    - Your child's full name
    - Your child's class
    - The reason for the absence
    - The expected return date

It is essential that all absences are reported on the first day of your child's absence and each subsequent day unless a return date has already been provided. This will help us ensure the safety and well-being of all students. We appreciate your cooperation in following this new procedure, as it will assist us in maintaining accurate attendance records and promptly addressing any concerns
